In 1900, ground was broken for the original Mount Washington Hotel, a strikingly luxurious building at the base of Mount Washington in the foreground of the renowned Presidential Range. Its builder, a New England industrialist Joseph Stickney, spared no expense, using the latest design and construction methods and installing innovative electricity (designed by Thomas Edison) and plumbing. For years the hotel catered to wealthy guests and celebrities and served as the backdrop for historic events. In 1986, the Mount Washington Hotel earned a National Historic Landmark designation.
In the years since, the hotel has undergone over $90 million in renovations and expansion projects. It still offers opulent accommodations, along with four-diamond dining, a world-class spa, 35,000 square feet of meeting space and amenities including championship golf courses and the state’s largest ski area.
